- The Texas Hill Country AVA is the third largest in the US, and Fredericksburg and Highway 290 sit at its center.
- Standard tastings at the wineries below run about $19 to $30 per person as of October 2026.
- Most big 290 wineries recommend booking, and several cap walk-in groups at 6 people.
- Fredericksburg is about 70 miles from downtown via I-10 West and US 87, roughly 1¼ hours each way, so make it a full day.
- Plan three to five wineries in a day, close together, and settle the driving before anyone pours.
- Wine Month passports run through October 31 and the Christmas Wine Affair runs November 23 to December 18, 2026.
San Antonio has a wine region right on its doorstep. Head northwest into the Hill Country and the limestone hills fill up with vineyards, tasting rooms and small German-settled towns, with Fredericksburg at the center. It makes one of the best day trips from the city, as long as you plan two things ahead: where you'll taste, and who's driving.
Below: how a winery day works, eight wineries we checked in October 2026 (fees and booking rules from each winery's own site), a sample route, and ways to get there without anyone staying sober. Confirm fees and hours before you go.
Why Hill Country wine is worth the drive
According to Texas Hill Country Wineries, the Texas Hill Country American Viticultural Area (AVA) covers 9 million acres. That makes it the third-largest AVA in the US, with more than 100 wineries and roughly 2,000 acres of vineyards on limestone, sandy loam and granite soils. The region is known for Mediterranean grape varieties, so expect names like Tempranillo and Tannat on tasting menus.
Fredericksburg is the hub. The Fredericksburg Convention & Visitor Bureau says the area has nearly 100 wineries, vineyards and tasting rooms, from estate vineyards along Highway 290 to tasting rooms downtown. Wineries along US 290, out toward Stonewall and Hye, market themselves together as Wine Road 290, and several of the best-known estates sit on that stretch.
The visitor bureau also notes that midweek visits (Sunday through Thursday) mean shorter waits than weekends.
How a winery day works
Tastings are a set flight for a fee. You pay per person for a guided pour of about five wines, usually 1 oz each. Seated, food-paired or tour options at the wineries below run about $40 to $95 as of October 2026.
Booking matters. Most larger 290 estates take online reservations (often through Tock) and recommend booking, especially on weekends. Grape Creek and K Estate won't seat groups over 6 without prior approval, and William Chris sends groups over 6 to its large-group tasting.
Pace yourself. Texas Hill Country Wineries suggests picking three to five wineries near each other for a single day. It also reminds you that tastes add up, so it's fine to sip and pour the rest into the spittoon. Bring ID, since staff will check it.
Food is hit or miss. The visitor bureau says many wineries serve only snacks such as cheese plates, and Grape Creek, K Estate and William Chris don't allow outside food. Plan a real lunch in Fredericksburg.
Texas Hill Country Wineries puts it plainly: always have a designated driver. Watch for cyclists, and never drink and drive. If nobody wants to skip the wine, book a tour or a driver (see below).
8 wineries worth your time
All fees are per person as of October 2026, taken from each winery's own site.
Becker Vineyards (Fredericksburg)
A long-running name: Becker's estate tasting room opened in 1996, and Becker is known for its lavender as well as its wine. The General Tasting is $27 (a welcome pour plus five 1 oz samples of your choice). A small-group tour and tasting is $45. Reservations aren't required, but Becker invites you to book ahead, and you pay on arrival. It's open daily (Mon–Thu 10–5, Fri–Sat 10–6, Sun 11–6; last pour 30 minutes before close). Becker Vineyards
Grape Creek Vineyards (Hwy 290, Fredericksburg)
Grape Creek bills its estate as "Tuscany in Texas," and it's one of the most recognizable stops on 290. The Classic Wine Tasting is $30. The Taste & Tour ($45, about 60 minutes) adds a tram ride through the working vineyard and barrel tastings, which makes it a good pick if you've never seen how wine is made. Reservations are recommended; walk-ins are taken as space allows. Guests must be 21+, and the patios and restaurant are members-only. Grape Creek Vineyards
William Chris Vineyards (Hye)
William Chris built its name on a "grown, not made" philosophy and Texas-grown wine. Its site displays a World's 50 Best Vineyards emblem. The Winemaker's Tasting is $30 (45 minutes, standing), and walk-ins are welcome Monday through Thursday when there's space. The seated Elevated Wine Tasting is $40 (Thu–Sun), and the food-paired Chef's Table is $95. Supervised children are welcome, and a walk-up bistro sells seasonal bites. William Chris Vineyards
Pedernales Cellars (Stonewall)
Pedernales sits on 145 oak-shaded acres overlooking the Pedernales River Valley. It's known for sustainably made wines and especially its Tempranillo, which gets its own Tempranillo Tasting ($50). The Cellar Tour & Tasting is $45 and limited to eight guests. It's open daily (10–5 Mon–Thu, 10–6 Fri–Sat, noon–5 Sun); book through its site, and large groups must reserve. Children count toward the reservation. Pedernales Cellars
K Estate, formerly Kuhlman Cellars (Hwy 290, Stonewall)
Kuhlman Cellars is now K Estate, and it's a good food-and-wine stop: the Paired Wine Tasting ($40) matches wines with chef-made small bites, and a Classic Tasting is $30. Reservations are recommended but not required. It's open daily 11–5:30 and is 21+ for guests. K Estate
Kalasi Cellars (Fredericksburg)
A woman-led boutique winery on about 16 acres just outside downtown Fredericksburg, off Wine Road 290, pouring 100% estate-grown Texas wines. The Estate Tasting is $25 (whites, rosé and reds) and the red-focused Enthusiast Tasting is $30; each is 45 minutes at the bar, and a private six-wine tasting is $45. Walk-ins are welcome, but booking (free) helps you get a spot. It's open daily 11–5, until 6 on Fridays and Saturdays, at 414 Goehmann Lane. Kalasi Cellars
Closer to San Antonio: Sister Creek Vineyards (Sisterdale, near Boerne)
Sister Creek has been pouring since 1988 in tiny historic Sisterdale. It's an easy first stop on the way up, and the best value on this list at $19 for five wines or $11 a glass. Self-guided winery tours are available. Hours are Sunday–Friday 10:30–5 and Saturday 10–6. Its site doesn't mention reservations, so call ahead for a group. Sister Creek Vineyards
Closer to San Antonio: Bending Branch Winery (Comfort)
Bending Branch calls itself the "Tannat House of Texas." A five-wine tasting is $30, and bourbon flights start at $25 if someone in your group prefers whiskey. Reservations are recommended and walk-ins are welcome. Unusually for this list, children and leashed pets are welcome. Note the schedule: it's open Thursday through Monday (noon–8 Thu, noon–7 Fri–Sat, noon–6 Sun–Mon) and closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Groups of 8 or more should call or book on Tock. A sample one-day route
This is a relaxed full day that mixes a closer winery with the 290 estates. Book the 290 tastings first and build the day around them.
- 8:00–8:30 a.m. Leave San Antonio with coffee and a real breakfast in you.
- About 10:30 a.m. First tasting (most rooms below open at 10 or 11).
- Midday Lunch in Fredericksburg.
- Afternoon One or two more tastings, plus a stroll down Main Street.
- 5:30–6:30 p.m. Head home, so you're not doing the whole drive in the dark.
A four-stop version:
- Late morning, Sister Creek (Sisterdale). A low-key, inexpensive first tasting. Thursday through Monday, Bending Branch in Comfort works instead.
- Lunch in Fredericksburg. Eat a real meal; the afternoon goes better for it.
- Early afternoon, Grape Creek, Becker or Kalasi. Book the Taste & Tour at Grape Creek if you want the vineyard tram ride.
- Late afternoon, William Chris or Pedernales. Both are east of town toward Hye and Stonewall. Pedernales's valley view is a nice way to end the day.
Check last-pour times: several close at 5 or 5:30 on weekdays.
Shorter on time? Skip Fredericksburg and do a half day in the Boerne–Comfort area: a tasting at Sister Creek or Bending Branch, lunch in Boerne or Comfort, and you are back in San Antonio by mid-afternoon.
Buying bottles? Texas Hill Country Wineries warns not to leave wine in a hot car. Bring a cooler with ice packs.
Getting there
Fredericksburg is about 70 miles from downtown San Antonio, roughly 1¼ hours each way via I-10 West to Boerne and US 87 north through Comfort, with Sisterdale a short detour off that route. Budget extra time between wineries. Here are your three main options. For the bigger question of whether you need a car on your trip at all, see Do you need a car in San Antonio?.
Drive yourself
Driving is the cheapest and most flexible option, but only if one person truly isn't drinking. Decide before you leave, not at the second winery, and ask for non-alcoholic options at each stop.
Join a group tour
Small-group tours take care of the driving and the bookings. Cottonwood Wine Tours runs two near-identical Fredericksburg day trips from San Antonio, each around $179 per person (as of October 2026). Both are 21+ and include tastings at Sister Creek Vineyards and Texas Wine Collective plus free time in Fredericksburg. The Viator version leaves from La Villita Assembly Hall and lasts 6 to 7 hours. Viator says it typically books about 27 days ahead. Compare it with other day trips on our best tours page.
If you want hotel pickup, book the Fredericksburg Wineries Day Trip on GetYourGuide. It's 6.5 hours, includes pickup from downtown and Riverwalk-area hotels, and costs about $179 per person as of October 2026.
The trade-off is that a group tour picks the wineries and sets the schedule.
Hire a private driver
If you want the ease of a tour but on your own terms, a private driver is the most flexible option. It makes sense for:
- Your own winery list. Becker for the lavender, Pedernales for the Tempranillo, a bourbon flight at Bending Branch on the way home: you choose the stops.
- Your own pace. Linger where you like the wine, cut a stop, or add a long lunch in Fredericksburg.
- Groups. Birthdays, bachelorette weekends and family reunions ride together, with no convoy of cars.
- Hotel pickup and drop-off. Start and end at your San Antonio hotel or rental.
- Nobody stays sober. Everyone enjoys the tastings, and everyone gets home safely.

When to go and what to bring
Best seasons. There's no bad time, but each season is different:
- Harvest (roughly July to September): Texas A&M AgriLife's viticulture team lists Hill Country harvest as July through September. Festive, but hot.
- Fall: Texas Hill Country Wineries runs its Texas Wine Month Passport through October 31, 2026, and its Christmas Wine Affair passport from November 23 to December 18, 2026. The Fredericksburg Food and Wine Festival runs October 23–25, 2026. Downtown Fredericksburg lights up for the holidays from mid to late November.
- Spring: The visitor bureau puts wildflower season at about mid-March to mid-May, which is beautiful for the drive.
For more dates, see our San Antonio events calendar.
What to bring and wear.
- Photo ID for everyone.
- A light sweater; some tasting rooms are kept cold.
- Flat, comfortable shoes for gravel and vineyard paths.
- Sun protection and water.
- A cooler with ice packs for bottles.
- Skip strong perfume or cologne; it interferes with tasting.
Our packing list covers the rest by season.
